George Tsunis: Greece and the U.S. should become a “beacon of opportunities”

At the conclusion of the 3rd Economic Conference of Naftemporiki, U.S. Ambassador to Greece, George Tsunis, delivered a touching and message-filled speech. He emphasized the principles of democracy, self-determination, and equal opportunities, expressing his desire for Greece and the U.S. to serve as a “beacon of opportunities.”

Tsunis reflected on how the fight for U.S. independence was grounded in values that originated in Greece, the birthplace of democracy.

He shared a personal story of his parents, who came from a poor village in Nafpaktia with no electricity or water, yet were able to find opportunities in America, which allowed him to get an education and build his own business.

He wishes for similar opportunities to be available to everyone, as true societal progress hinges on ensuring equality.

He also addressed the importance of gender equality and inclusive immigration policies, arguing that immigrants bring valuable skills that can benefit the economy and society.

Tsunis underscored the need to welcome and integrate people in need, noting that ignoring global tragedies is not an option for democratic societies.

Finally, Tsunis criticized the use of hate and divisive rhetoric, urging people to embrace diversity and acceptance, following the example of ancient Greek values of hospitality and compassion. He expressed pride in both his American upbringing and his Greek heritage, concluding with heartfelt remarks about his love for Greece.

“May Greece and the U.S. become a beacon of opportunities and acceptance for all,” he stated, closing with “Long live Greece, thank you.”
