High school club parties, underage drinking a ‘lucrative business’
High school parties held at clubs across the Greek capital, often involving underage drinking and exposure to dangerous, poor-quality alcohol, have become a lucrative business with students frequently recruited by clubs as "promoters" to attract peers, former participants have told Kathimerini.
The issue made headline news last weekend when eight minors were hospitalized after consuming alcohol at an Athens nightclub on Vouliuagmenis Avenue and feeling unwell.
In Greece, it is prohibited to sell alcohol to individuals under 18 years old.
The incident alarmed parents and guardians, while also prompting police authorities into action.
Police reported that a 20-year-old manager of the entertainment venue was arrested on charges of endangering minors. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
