Obama breaks his silence after Harris’ defeat: We are willing to accept peaceful transfer of power
Barack ObamaBarack Obama issued a statement regarding Kamala Harris’ defeat of Donald Trump at US election on Tuesday (5/11), citing a host of economic circumstances as responsible for the result.
The former president of the US and former first lady Michelle Obama, who played a central role in the final weeks of the presidential campaign on behalf of Vice President Harris, congratulated President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.
“This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our deep disagreements with Republicans on a number of issues,” the Obamas wrote in a statement. “But living in a democracy means recognizing that our viewpoint will not always win and being willing to accept a peaceful transfer of power.”
“As I said on the campaign trail, America has been through a lot in recent years – from a historic pandemic and the price hikes that resulted from the pandemic, to the rapid changes and the sense that many people have that, no matter how hard they work, walking on water is the best they can do. These conditions have created headwinds for Democrats around the world, and last night showed that America is not immune,” Obama said in his statement.

“In a country as large and diverse as ours, we will not always agree on everything,” he admits in the statement. “‘But progress requires us to show good faith and grace – even to people with whom we deeply disagree. That’s how we got here, and that’s how we will continue to build a country that is fairer, more equal and freer.”
The statement was released to “X” shortly after Kamala Harris of Howard University in Washington, D.C., made remarks where she formally and publicly conceded Trump’s victory.
