Winter arrives up north

Freezing temperatures hit northern Greece Saturday morning, signaling winter's arrival. Areas including Drama, Florina, Kozani, Ptolemaida, and Lagadas in Thessaloniki recorded big drops. The lowest was -9 Celsius in Nevrokopi, Drama. In Ptolemaida, Nea Kafkaso in Florina, and Perithori in Nevrokopi, lows reached -6C, while other areas like Varyko, Grevena and Paranesti saw -5C. Thessaloniki's Delta municipality recorded 3C in Halastra and Sindos. The cold snap also affected the city of Thessaloniki itself, with morning lows of 3C.

The National Meteorological Service said rain is expected this week, breaking the dry spell, and temperatures will remain seasonably cold, with a slight warming Tuesday.
