Cyprus reacts to Samaras: ‘Historic meeting, part of Cyprus’ strategy’

The comments made by former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras regarding "frivolities" during the meeting between President Christodoulides and President Erdogan have sparked a response from the Director of the Cypriot president's office, Victor Papadopoulos.

"President Nikos Christodoulides did not engage in any frivolity with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but a discussion," emphasized the director during an interview with state broadcaster ERT on Monday. "If we want to achieve our goals we need to discuss with Turkey directly and this is what we did."

Although Cyprus typically avoids commenting on Greece's internal politics, the remark was considered inappropriate and needed to be addressed. The Cypriot side felt awkward and upset by Samaras' comment, which was perceived as ironic towards both the Cypriot President and the meeting, ERT reported.
