Valeria Golino: The enchanting Italian star visits Athens

A timelessly captivating star, Valeria Golino, will soon be in Athens. The renowned Italian actress, whose mother is Greek, will visit Greece as an honored guest at the 37th Panorama of European Cinema.

According to information from protothema.gr, the 59-year-old actress, who has left an indelible mark on the silver screen, will remain in Greece from Friday to Sunday. On Saturday evening, she will attend the screening of I Told You So (Te l’avevo detto) at the “Trianon” cinema. Golino stars in this film alongside Italian director Ginevra Elkann.

The film promises suspense, intensity, twists, and dark humor. Set in Rome during an unseasonal January heatwave, the rising temperatures bring chaos as people and animals lose control. Elkann’s second feature-length film portrays a society grappling with personal fears and societal tensions, blending dark comedy with a visually heated aesthetic that mirrors the characters’ turmoil.

A Career of Memorable Collaborations
Born in Naples to an Italian father and a Greek mother, Valeria Golino embodies a blend of Italian and Greek temperament. With striking blue eyes and dark, curly hair, she remains one of cinema’s most alluring figures. Notably, Golino was the second choice for the iconic role in Pretty Woman, narrowly losing out to Julia Roberts.

Golino’s breakthrough in Hollywood came in 1988 with her role in the Academy Award-winning Rain Man, starring alongside Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. She continued her Hollywood career with performances in Hot Shots! (1991), where she took on a comedic and daringly sexual role, Leaving Las Vegas (1995) with Nicolas Cage, Escape from L.A. (1996) with Kurt Russell, and Frida (2002), where she played a memorable supporting role opposite Salma Hayek.

Among her nearly 90 films is The Slaughter of the Cock by Cypriot director Andreas Pantzis, where she not only starred but also contributed as a producer. Her most recent role in a major Hollywood production is in Pablo Larraín’s Maria, where she plays Maria Callas’s sister opposite Angelina Jolie.
