Farming sector impacted by ‘70,000 workforce deficit’

Significant farm labor shortages persist across the country, posing a major challenge to agricultural production, a leading sector official has underlined. 

Moschos Korasidis, general manager at ETHEA, the National Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, estimated, in comments to Kathimerini, that the agricultural sector is currently short of approximately 70,000 workers. 

The labor deficit, he noted, will impact various regions across the country, disrupting the harvest of key crops, including olives, vegetables, and fruits.

The ETHEA official said that the challenges posed by the labor shortage "will become increasingly evident in the coming days, particularly with the olive harvest, which has already been delayed due to the drought."
