Greek cinema scholar named fellow of Australian Academy of the Humanities
The Australian Academy of the Humanities has named Greek-Australian academic and cinema scholar Vrasidas Karalis as one of its 41 new fellows.
Karalis, 64, is an associate professor of Modern Greek at the University of Sydney and co-editor of the Modern Greek Studies Journal. He is also the president of the Sydney Society of Literature and Aesthetics and the translator of Australian novelist and playwright Patrick White, though his main area of interest is Greek cinema.
"Professor Vrasidas Karalis is the leading international scholar of Greek cinema. Original and comprehensive work of data collection, analysis and interpretation represents a ground-breaking justification of the importance of the Greek cinema to the history of European cinema," the academy said in its announcement of the fellowships.
