High share of spending goes to housing costs
Three out of 10 Greeks in urban centers must allocate more than 40% of their disposable income to housing as a total - rent, electricity bills and so forth - while the cost of housing in general corresponds to 35.6% of the disposable income of households in Greece.
Based on Eurostat data for 2023, Greece ranks first in these two indicators in the European Union due to the rapid rise in rents, as well as energy costs and low incomes, as the convergence with the bloc, after the economic crisis, has not yet been achieved.
Almost one in two people either have debts for mortgage installments and bills or owe rent, without having the ability to live in a warm house in the winter.
Greece has the largest rate of people (31%) forced to spend over 40% of their disposable income on housing.
