Crete rattled by 4.0 magnitude quake

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Greek island of Crete on Wednesday morning, with no immediate reports of damage.

The National Observatory of Athens' Institute of Geodynamics reported that the tremor occurred 96 kilometers southeast of Zakros on the island's eastern coast, at a depth of 10.7 kilometers.

Greece lies in one of the world's most seismically active areas, and earthquakes are common. However, fatalities and major damage are rare occurrences.
