The 32-year-old player, who had a stint in the Greek league during the 2018-19 season with Olympiacos, is reported to have taken his own life. Jānis Timma was born on July 2, 1992, and began his basketball journey in Riga, making his professional debut with Liepāja Lauvas during the 2011-12 season. From 2012 to 2014, he played for Ventspils, before returning to Riga for the 2014-15 season.

In 2015, Timma took a major step in his career, joining Zenit St. Petersburg, where he played until 2017, followed by a transfer to Baskonia.
