Greek citizenship for Greek-born adoptees: It’s not complicated

Children who were given up for adoption abroad are now asking the country that birthed them to correct a historical injustice and grant them Greek citizenship.

The waiting is excruciating.

Waiting to have something returned, a birthright, that was taken. Realizing that 4,000 babies and children were forgotten, too long ago to care about - a past too painful to remember.

But what is difficult, controversial, or political about restoring citizenship to a group of people who are Greek-born of Greek parents? According to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, nothing at all.

Never was there more hope than two months ago when we met with the prime minister himself, who agreed to correct a historic injustice by affirming the identities of those Greek-born adoptees who want to have their Greek citizenship restored.
