Experts warn of health risks from contaminated floodwaters in southern Athens

Experts have issued a warning to individuals who came into contact with contaminated floodwaters on Poseidonos Avenue near Alimos in southern Athens on Christmas night.

Speaking to public broadcaster ERT on Friday, Nikolaos Thomaidis, a professor of analytical chemistry at the University of Athens, highlighted the risks posed by urban wastewater. He explained that it often contains not only chemicals but also active pathogens. While viruses like Covid-19 and influenza present minimal risks in this context, other harmful microorganisms could potentially cause severe infections.

"Anyone who has been submerged or exposed to this water should wash thoroughly, especially their feet, to prevent infections," Thomaidis advised. He emphasized the importance of disinfection, particularly for those who may have walked barefoot or with wet feet through the floodwaters.
