New emergency weather bulletin by EMY – A second wave of severe weather approaches, snow in Attica on Saturday morning

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has updated its emergency bulletin for hazardous weather phenomena, with severe weather continuing to impact many regions of the country with snow, rain, and gale-force winds.

Today, Friday (27/12/2024), the phenomena (rainfall and snowfall) will weaken in most areas, but tomorrow, Saturday (28/12/2024), a temporary intensification of the phenomena is expected across eastern Greece.

A. Friday (27/12):
In Crete, heavy rains and thunderstorms will occur in localized areas, along with snowfall in the mountains. Dense snowfalls are also expected in eastern Macedonia and Thrace, starting in the evening in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, and overnight in areas with lower altitudes (indicatively, from 200 meters and above).

Gale-force northeasterly winds will blow across the Aegean, eastern and southern Evia, eastern Attica, and locally in eastern Peloponnese (8 to 9 Beaufort, decreasing slightly to 8 Beaufort by afternoon).

B. Saturday (28/12):
Heavy rains and thunderstorms are forecasted for the central and southern Aegean, the Sporades (in the morning), Evia (until midday), the Cyclades, the eastern Aegean islands, locally in Crete, and from the afternoon in the Dodecanese.

Snowfall is expected in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the mainland, in the mountains and semi-mountainous regions of Evia, Attica (in the morning), the northern and eastern Aegean islands, the northern Cyclades, and Crete. The snow will be dense, particularly in eastern Macedonia and Thrace in the morning, as well as in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas of Evia and eastern Central Greece during the same period.

Gale-force northeasterly winds will continue in the Aegean (8 to 9 Beaufort locally).

Meteo: Weather Worsens Again – When Will Eastern Central Greece, Evia, Aegean, and Crete Be Affected

According to forecast data from meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens, weather conditions will worsen again on the afternoon of Friday, December 27, beginning from the northeast. More detailed analysis:

• On Friday afternoon (27/12), light rain will occur in the lowlands of northeastern Greece, with some snow in mountainous and semi-mountainous regions. Brief snowfall may also occur in lowland areas of Thrace.
• By the end of the day, central and eastern Greece, as well as Halkidiki, will be affected, with snowfalls mainly in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. Brief snowfall might occur in parts of Central and Western Macedonia.
• Overnight and into Saturday morning (28/12), the phenomena will concentrate in eastern and southern mainland Greece and the Aegean. Rain is expected in lowland and coastal areas, scattered thunderstorms in the Sporades, Evia, and the northern Cyclades, while snow will fall not only in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas but also in lower-altitude areas of Halkidiki, Thessaly, Evia, and eastern Central Greece.
• By Saturday afternoon (28/12), the phenomena will focus on eastern Central Greece, Evia, the Aegean, and Crete, with snowfall in mountainous and semi-mountainous mainland areas and in the mountains of Crete. Strong localized rainfall and thunderstorms will also occur in the Aegean.
• Strong northerly winds will blow on Friday (27/12) and Saturday (28/12) in the Aegean, as well as in some eastern mainland areas and Thrace.
• A slight drop in temperature is expected.

Snow and Storms into Sunday (29/12)
On Sunday (29/12), Evia, Attica, the Aegean islands, Crete, and the Dodecanese will initially experience cloudy skies with local rainfall, snowfall in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, and scattered storms in marine and coastal regions. However, the phenomena will gradually weaken from north to south.

Winds will blow from the northeast at 3 to 5 Beaufort in the west and 6 to 7 Beaufort in the east. Regarding temperatures, according to forecaster Ziakopoulos:

• In eastern and southern areas, maximum temperatures will be 2-3°C below seasonal averages.
• In the mainland, especially northern regions, nighttime and early morning frost is expected.

From Monday through New Year’s Day (Wednesday), the weather is expected to improve across the country.

Weather: Sailing Bans Due to Gale-Force Winds
It is noted that sailing bans are in effect from Attica’s ports due to gale-force winds blowing since early Friday morning.

According to announcements by port authorities, ships from the port of Piraeus are not departing, except for those heading to the Saronic Gulf islands.

A sailing ban is also in effect from Rafina port for Cyclades and Marmari, while no ferries are operating from Lavrio port. Routes from Agia Marina to Nea Styra, Arkitsa to Aidipsos, and Volos to Sporades (after 10 AM) are suspended.

Additionally, the Kavala-Prinos-Thassos line is closed, while ferries between Keramoti, Kavala, and Limenas, Thassos, are running normally.

Travelers planning to depart today are advised to check with local port authorities and travel agencies for potential changes to routes due to adverse weather conditions.

Further Weather Deterioration Expected Tomorrow

From tomorrow (28/12), further weather deterioration is expected, with falling temperatures, stronger northerly winds, and snowfall even in Attica.

According to meteorologists, over the weekend, many regions of the country are expected to be blanketed in white, including Magnesia, Evia, eastern Central Greece, and northern Attica, particularly Mount Parnitha and Mount Penteli.

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis noted that the ongoing wave of bad weather will gradually subside, with a brief lull today. However, another wave of severe weather will arrive over the weekend from Ukraine, bringing a polar air mass.

This will result in snow across eastern parts of the country, but from Monday, the weather will calm down, remaining mild through New Year’s Day.

The Weather on Sunday, December 29, 2024

In eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Halkidiki, eastern Thessaly, eastern Central Greece, eastern Peloponnese, and the Aegean, the weather will feature periods of increased cloudiness with localized rain, primarily in the Aegean, where thunderstorms will occur in the southeastern areas until the morning hours. Snowfall is expected in the mountainous regions of Crete. Elsewhere in the country, the weather will generally be clear with occasional local clouds.

Winds in the west will be variable at 3 to 4 Beaufort. In the east, winds will blow from the north at 5 to 7 Beaufort, reaching 8 Beaufort in the Aegean during the morning hours, gradually weakening throughout the day.

Temperatures will see a slight increase in maximum values, especially in western areas. Frost will occur in mainland areas during the early morning hours.

The Weather on Monday, December 30, 2024

The weather will generally be clear across most regions, with occasional local clouds. In the Cyclades and Crete, there will be cloud cover with localized rainfall until the afternoon. Visibility will be locally reduced in the west, central, and northern parts of the country during the early morning and evening hours.

Winds in the west, central, and northern areas will be variable at 3 to 4 Beaufort. In the remaining areas, winds will blow from the north at 4 to 5 Beaufort, reaching 5 to 6 Beaufort in the Aegean and 6 to 7 Beaufort in its southeastern parts.

Temperatures will rise, though frost will still occur locally in central and northern mainland areas during the early morning hours.
