Tourism contributes 13% of GDP
Greek tourism - including domestic tourism and related investments - contributed 13% to the country's gross domestic product, amounting to 28.5 billion euros, in 2023.
An annual report by the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE) reveals that the South Aegean region accounted for the largest share of inbound tourism receipts at 27% of the total. Crete followed with 26%, Attica with 19%, the Ionian Islands with 10%, and Central Macedonia with 8%. Together, these five regions contributed 91% of the country's total tourism receipts.
At the same time, Greece maintained a high level of visitor satisfaction, with an average rating of 9.1/10 across all regions at the peak of the season. The cultural experience reached above-average levels, with scores of 9.3 in the third quarter and 9.4 in the fourth. Food and drink received slightly lower ratings, at 9/10...
