Romania cracks down on online violations

Romania has taken a strong stance against online violations with a series of arrests and convictions in recent months. Law enforcement agencies have been cracking down on individuals and organizations engaging in illegal activities, resulting in arrests and convictions.

The tardy response of the police in Romania to the distress calls of murdered teen Alexandra Macesanu continues to unleash a wave of indignation and political strife in the country - which some say echoes the response to a deadly nightclub fire in Bucharest in 2015.

Interior Minister Nicolae Moga stepped down on Tuesday amid a storm of criticism of the slow response to the distress calls made to the police emergency number by Alexandra Macesanu, the 15-year-old who was raped and killed last week in Romania.

The director of the Romanian Special Telecommunications Service, TST, Ionel-Sorinel Vasilva, quit on Monday after the institution was accused of not reacting on time to the desperate SOS calls of a teenager who was kidnapped, raped and murdered last week in southern Romania.

Lawyer Alexandru Bogdan asserted that Gheorghe Dinca admitted on Sunday to his murder deeds in both 15-year-old Alexandra Macesanu case, and in the case of the 18-year-old girl Luiza Melencu who has disappeared in April 2019. "Deeds were admitted. It is about the facts already known. There are no other data. (...) It is about the two girls. He admitted to his deeds, obviously.

Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă on Saturday night wrote on her Facebook page that albeit her appeal to the political class to not try to confiscate the Caracal tragedy and turn it into an attack topic, "this appeal to respect, maturity and compassion was not honoured".

President Klaus Iohannis announced that he will request a comprehensive investigation in the meeting of Romania's Supreme Council of Defense (CSAT), due next Tuesday, the way things were handled in the case of the teenage girl killed in southern Caracal, pointing out that should it be proven that wrong or delayed action has been taken, the guilty will have to be severely punished.
