The businessman, oenologist, and former mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris, took his last breath tonight at a private clinic in the city, where he had been hospitalized for serious health problems recently.

Former Thessaloniki mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos and Michalis Lemousias, who served as the local authority's general secretary, were each sentenced on Friday by a Thessaloniki court to eight years in prison for money laundering related to the embezzlement of municipal funds.

The two were allowed to walk free pending their appeals.

Former Thessaloniki mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos and the local authority's ex-general secretary Michalis Lemousias have been indicted to a new trial on charges of handling money that was illegally acquired.
