MADRID - The Serbian men's basketball team reached the World Cup semi-finals after beating Brazil 84-56 (21-17, 16-15, 29-12, 18-12) in the quarter-finals in Madrid late Wednesday.

Coach Aleksandar Djordjevic's team achieved a feat by outclassing the quality opponent, earning the chance to fight it out for a medal.

Huge upsets lit up the basketball World Cup on Sept. 10 as France beat hosts Spain 65-52 while Serbia thumped Brazil 84-56 to set up an intriguing semifinal clash.

Holders the United States and Lithuania will meet in the first semi in Barcelona on Sept. 11 while the Serbs and the French will lock horns in Madrid on Sept. 12.

The team led by Aleksandar Đorđevic managed to stage a surprise win after finishing fourth in group A with a score of 2 wins and 3 lošes. Greece won all 5 games in group B.

Turkey forward Emir Preldzic made his second of two last-minute 3-pointers only 5 seconds from the finish to stun Australia 65-64 at the Basketball World Cup on Sept. 7, sending the reigning silver medalists into the quarterfinals.

The World Championship came to a sudden and disappointing end for the Greek national team as after five wins in as many games in the group stage it got thrashed 90-72 by Serbia in the round of 16 in Madrid on Sunday.
