A 37-year-old convicted child molester who has allegedly confessed to murdering his 11-year-old niece in Ilia in the western Peloponnese on Sunday, reportedly admitted to trying to rape the young girl before killing her on Tuesday.

This year's International Festival of Literature and Art, organized by the Kazantzakis Museum in the village of Myrtia, close to Iraklio on Crete, has the celebrated Greek writer's travel book "Japan-China" as its starting point.

Kazantzakis had expressed his admiration for the English and their "fundamental virtues," describing them as people of few words, a lot of action and great humanity.
