Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated unharmed Saturday after someone threw an explosive device at a campaign event in a western port city, officials said. Police wrestled a suspect to the ground as screaming bystanders scrambled to get away and smoke filled the air.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was on Friday confirmed dead after he was shot at during a campaign speech in Nara City, western Japan, local media reported citing officials.

Abe (67) was taken to the hospital unconscious and in cardiac arrest, according to the media. The attacker was arrested.
Videos and photos of the moment of the wounding and of the weapon from which Abe was shot appeared on social networks. The suspect for the attempted assassination of Shinzo Abe is, according to the media, a former member of the Japanese navy.

Abe (67) was left unconscious after he was shot by an unidentified assailant, who was taken into custody by police at the scene, Kyodo reported.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said he did not know Abe's condition after the attack, and Kyodo news agency and NHK reported that Abe, 67, was unconscious and in cardiac arrest when he was taken to hospital.

He was airlifted to a hospital but officials said he was not breathing and his heart had stopped. Later, Japan's NHK television said Abe has died in the hospital.
