Sagalassos

Excavation and restoration efforts are ongoing to restore the 1,892-year-old Hadrian's Fountain, one of the monumental fountains in the ancient city of Sagalassos, situated in the southern province of Burdur's Ağlasun district.

As 2023 nears its end, archaeologists working in ancient cities all around Anatolia made significant discoveries throughout the year. According to archaeology magazine Arkeofili editors, the most exciting archaeological discoveries in Türkiye in 2023 are as follows:

Home to ancient cities such as Kibyra and Sagalassos that contains dozens of historical artifacts, Burdur also attracts attention with its museums, which welcomed 249,000 people in 2019.

Excavation and restoration work has resumed in the ancient city of Sagalassos in the southern city of Burdur's Ağlasun district.

According to written sources, the history of Sagalassos dates back to 333 B.C. when it was conquered by Alexander the Great. The city had been one of the five most important ceramic production centers in the Roman era.
