CHP convention kicks off with bylaw discussions

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on Sept. 6 officially launched a convention aimed at amending the party's charter and preparing for future elections.

After an opening speech by party leader Özgür Özel, the convention in the capital Ankara continued behind closed doors.

Delegates, honorary board members and former chairs were in attendance.

Cabinet set to convene in Ahlat to mark historic battle

The next cabinet meeting scheduled for Aug. 25 will be held in the eastern city of Bitlis' Ahlat district, rather than in the capital Ankara, to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Manzikert.

The battle fought in 1071 between the Byzantine and Seljuk empires was a pivotal event that led to the Turkification of Anatolia.

St. Blaise monument to be built in his hometown

A monument will be built in the Central Anatolian province of Sivas for Saint Blaise, who is recognized as one of the first bishops of Christianity in Anatolia.

In Sivas province, a study was initiated to locate the exact placement of the tomb of Saint Blaise, which was estimated to be in Gök Medrese neighborhood. The excavation work carried out by archaeologists was completed.

High speed railway launched between Ankara, Sivas

A new high-speed train service has been launched between the capital Ankara and the Central Anatolian province of Sivas.

The train will depart from Ankara's high-speed train station and pass through the nearby provinces of Kırıkkale and Yozgat before it reaches Sivas, Transport Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu informed at the new line's inauguration ceremony.

Turkish clubs advance to UEFA Conference League playoffs

Galatasaray eliminated Scotland's St Johnstone with a 5-3 aggregate score on Aug. 12 to advance to the UEFA Europa League playoffs.
