All schools of the Municipality of Xylokastro – Eurostini, in Corinthia, will remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday.

According to the municipality, the decision to not operate schools for the second consecutive day was taken due to the extraordinary conditions that have arisen from the fire, which broke out last Sunday in the area of Rozenon.

A wildfire fanned by strong winds raged uncontrolled on a rugged mountainous area in the central Greek region of Corinthia early on Monday, the fire brigade said.

Hundreds of firefighters assisted by nine aircraft battled the blaze which broke out on Sunday near the seaside town of Xylokastro on the Peloponnese peninsula, some 120 km (75 miles) west of Athens.

A wildfire raging since Sunday morning in the Corinth regional unit is the largest of the 27 fires that broke out in forest and farmland areas across Greece over the past 24 hours.

The Fire Service says that 22 of those fires were swiftly put under control before spreading out and firefighters are still trying to put out the other fight.
