Antifa activists in Bulgaria have told BIRN that they see moves in the US to criminalise the left-wing movement as an issue pushed by the far right.

Liberal scholar and progressive icon Noam Chomsky has some harsh words for the violent alt-left group Antifa and the mainstream Democrats who support them.

“As for Antifa, it’s a minuscule fringe of the Left, just as its predecessors were,” Chomsky told the Washington Examiner on Thursday. “It’s a major gift to the Right, including the militant Right, who are exuberant.”

The riots between pro-Trump supporters and self-described anti-fascists (Antifa) protesters in Berkeley, California last week drew some media attention. Police, who for the most part stood down during the riots, despite the use by the black-clad Antifa group of explosive devices, made tens of arrests.

German authorities have arrested a suspect with reported links to Islamist groups over the bomb that shattered the bus window of German Champion League football club Borussia Dortumund before Tuesdays night’s match against French club Monaco. Police are also investigating another man.
