Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

In what is seen as an expression of Berlin's eagerness to see a solution to the decades-old name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) over the latter's name, German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the matter in a phone conversation with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday.

With Greece having officially rejected "Ilindenska Makedonija" as a candidate name for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, talks have reportedly continued behind the scenes in a bid to break the deadlock and resolve the decades-old dispute.

It is unlikely that a solution will be found in ongoing name talks between Athens and Skopje on the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), the head of the junior partner in Greece's coalition government said on Tuesday.

No constitutional change will be needed for a solution with Greece on the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), the country's Prime Minister Zoran Zaev reportedly said on Monday, and expressed support for the name Republic of Ilinden Macedonia.

Athens said Monday it welcomed Skopje's acceptance of a Greek demand that any name agreed between the two countries be "erga omnes," i.e. to be used domestically and internationally, adding however that the two sides would ideally agree on one of the names proposed by UN mediator Matthew Nimetz.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) said Saturday he is ready to go ahead with a new name for his country in order to solve a decades-long name dispute with Greece and pave the way for full integration of the small Balkan country into the European Union and NATO.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis and former socialist Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos have  rejected  "Republic of Ilinden Macedonia" as a candidate name for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as irredentist.
