It makes no sense to question Turkey's NATO membership over its decision to purchase Russian S-400 missile defense systems, which has fueled tensions with Washington, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said according to reports, adding that other members of the transatlantic alliance have already installed Russian S-300.

Cavusoglu's comments were carried by state-owned Anadolu news agency after Bloomberg reported that Turkey had rejected a US proposal to deliver a Patriot missile system by the end of the year.

The report said current plans for the modernization of the aging planes, ships and missile silos that make up the U.S. nuclear arsenal would cost 50 percent more than if the U.S. only operated and maintained its current equipment in the field.

Lockheed Martin Chief Executive Marillyn Hewson said Poland and Turkey were interested in the company's MEADS missile defense system, which has already been selected by Germany.

The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of precision bomb kits valued at $70 million to Turkey, the Pentagon said on Oct. 29. 

Lawmakers have 15 days to block the sale, although such action is rare. Once it has cleared that hurdle, Turkey and the U.S. government can negotiate the actual sale. 

Turkey has again extended the deadline for bids for a multi-billion dollar anti-missile defense system tender, despite having provisionally awarded the deal to China last year.
