Türkiye is nearing an agreement to purchase Eurofighter jets, Defense Minister Yaşar Güler said on Aug. 14, expressing optimism about the negotiations.

"I think we are nearing the end," Güler told private broadcaster HaberTürk during a televised interview.

U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Jeff Flake has stated that a significant stride was taken regarding the sale of F-16 jets to Türkiye, without specifying the nature of the step.

"Today marks an important step forward in Türkiye's purchase of the latest-generation F-16 Block 70 fighter jets and upgrades to its existing fleet of F-16s," Flake said on a social media post on June 6.

The modernization process of Türkiye's existing fleet of F-16s will commence without delay, immediately after the 15-day period granted to the U.S. Congress for potential objections to the sale of fighter jets and upgrade kits, says U.S. Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told his U.S. counterpart, Antony Blinken, in a call on Dec. 27 that Türkiye expects the United States to keep its promises on the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Ankara.

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has had a phone conversation with United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to discuss NATO expansion with Finland and Türkiye's demand of supplying 40 new F-16s from the U.S., the Turkish ministry said in a statement.

Türkiye will choose another way if the Congress of the United States imposes conditions for sale of F-16 fighter jets demanded by Türkiye, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said on Jan. 31.
