A total of 296 migrants and refugees arrived on the island of Lampedusa last night.

Meanwhile, during the previous day, 487 people arrived on this small island south of Sicily.

More than 230 migrants reached Greece in small boats over the past two days, including a rare case of a crossing from north Africa to Greece's southern mainland, authorities have said.

The arrivals come as the government braces for a potential increase - that so far hasn't materialized - in migratory flows due to the fighting in the Middle East.

A group of 75 migrants crossing to Europe from North Africa has been rescued from a crippled boat south of the island of Crete, Greek authorities said Friday.

More than 230 migrants crossing the Mediterranean in small boats from North Africa reached Greece's southern island of Crete over the weekend, Greek authorities said Monday.

The arrivals, in six separate crossings, far outnumbered the few dozen migrants who took the more common route from Turkey to the nearby eastern Aegean islands over the weekend.

In a single day, the cost of crude oil jumped by 5%, following a speech from US President Joe Biden, who suggested that Israel might target Iranian oil facilities. As a result, the price of OPEC oil climbed to 74.90 dollars per barrel, while Brent futures reached 77.54 dollars per barrel.

The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, reports an increase in illegal migration flows from Turkey to the Greek islands during the first eight months of 2024, with 37,163 people crossing the borders illegally.
