Fighting Resumed in Eastern Ukrainian City of Slaviansk

The Ukrainian law enforces have resumed artillery strikes on Slaviansk and adjoining settlements on Monday morning, according to international media reports.

On Sunday, military units loyal to the Kiev authorities used multiple Grad launch artillery installations to shell the center of Slaviansk, killing four people, including a child, Chairman of the Supreme Council of self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic Denis Pushilin told ITAR-TASS.

The Eastern Ukrainian city has been living without electricity and has been suffering from drinking water shortages for almost a week now.

Meanwhile,Ukraine's new President Petro Poroshenko has pledged that the deadly fighting in eastern Ukraine must end "this week", the BBC informed.

"We must stop the gunfire this week," the tycoon said in a statement, a day after his inauguration in Kiev.

"For me, every day that people die, every day that Ukraine pays such a high price is unacceptable."

He pointed out that it was vital to "restore the Ukrainian border so that the safety of each Ukrainian citizen is guaranteed".

Poroshenko's statement followed the meeting with the special envoy from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Heidi Tagliavini, and the Russian ambassador to Kiev, Mikhail Zurabov.
