McAllister to become new EP rapporteur for Serbia
BRUSSELS - David McAllister of the European People's Party (EPP) is set to become the new European Parliament (EP) rapporteur for Serbia, Tanjug has learned at the MEP's office.
McAllister's appointment has been made at a closed-door EPP meeting, but it is yet to be officially confirmed by the EP's Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The 41-year-old politician, a close aide of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, led the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Lower Saxony between 2010 and May this year, when he was elected to the EP.
Sources at McAllister's office said that he will not make public statements before his official appointment.
Born in Berlin to Scottish parents who worked there, McAllister has dual, German-British citizenship.
A lawyer by profession, he has served as the chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the Landtag (parliament) of Lower Saxony from 2003 to 2010 and was elected party president in 2008.
He has been a member of the supervisory board of Volkswagen since 2010.
