Independent candidate in this Sunday's presidential elections, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu said on Thursday that a 'new player' has joined the electoral campaign, namely the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA), which he says has 'confused' the voters by its actions.

'My speech today should have looked different, if we had not witnessed a new player joining the electoral campaign. This player is called the DNA... We are witnesses to custody-taking, searches and other criminal procedures in which, of course, top politicians from several parties have been involved, but all these things have equaled a diversion that has confused the voters to a significant extent and has increased an already-seated feeling of mistrust', Tariceanu told a rally in Bucharest to mark the end of his pre-election campaign.
The incumbent Senate speaker admitted it is good to hold those who have broken the law to account and stressed he will encourage the institution to do its job without taking into account the 'political calendar' or 'other opportunities'.

'However, the fact that spectacular actions of the judicial system overlapped the electoral campaign has pushed the candidates' showing, their platforms and profile to the background and the electorate, therefore, has got to know but a small part of these things that would have been important in order to know what choice to make', Tariceanu said.AGERPRES
