On the front line
The deadly terrorist attack against the staff of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris on Wednesday, which left 12 people dead, is clearly not a French problem and should be a cause for concern for everyone. We can safely say now that extremist Islamist terrorism has grown into a major threat for all of Europe.
The are a number of countries in Greece?s broader region where Islamic fundamentalism has been rapidly gaining ground. The risk of this phenomenon spreading to Greece is not something that should be dismissed or taken lightly.
Moreover, Greece?s partners in the West should also remember that because of its geographical position our country finds itself on the front line, guarding Europe from this threat. This means that they should be more involved in protecting Greece?s borders and ensuring that the country is not left to its fate. It is in their interests, as well as Greece?s, to do so.
