Slovenian, Croatian prime ministers meeting on Monday

Ljubljana – The prime ministers of Slovenia and Croatia, Janez Janša and Andrej Plenković, will meet in Otočec in south Slovenia on Monday to unveil a memorial celebrating cooperation between both governments during the time the countries were gaining independence.

Unveiled in a year when both countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of their independence, the memorial will recognise bilateral meetings and cooperation between two friendly countries, Janša’s office said on Saturday.

The ceremony will also feature the prime ministers who were in office in 1991, Slovenia’s Lojze Peterle and Croatia’s Franjo Gregurić.

Government delegations from both countries held regular meetings before the Yugoslav army’s attack on the newly independent Slovenia and Croatia, with official meetings having started in October 1991.

On 5 November 1991, the governments held talks in Otočec, in a castle on a river island in the south of the country. The Slovenian delegation included Peterle, Janša, who served as defence minister at the time, and Andrej Ocvirk as the deputy prime minister.

Janša’s office did not specify whether the prime ministers will also discuss current affairs or bilateral relations.
