Kayaker Osterman wins silver at European Championships

Munich – Slovenian Anja Osterman won silver in the women’s kayak single 200 metre race at the multisport European Championships in Munich on Saturday.

Osterman was 0.213 seconds slower than the gold medallist Emma Jorgensen of Denmark. Third place went to Marta Walczykiewicz of Poland, who was 0.286 seconds slower than Jorgensen.

“The start was not good. The starting official was correcting me for a long while and it made me nervous, and it showed in the race. I’m happy with second place, but it’s also eating at me a bit because I could have won.”

Tomorrow, Osterman will be rowing in the final of the women’s single 500 metre event as the European Championships in canoe sprint and rowing will be coming to an end. “If tomorrow I manage to get the medal taken from me today, it will be really great.”

“It’s easier to correct mistakes in a 500 metre event … The start will not be as important as today. The middle part of the course will be key, when you need to stay in the game for the 100 metre finish.”

This is a fifth championships podium for Osterman, having won the first three with Špela Ponomarenko Janić in doubles, and her first in singles, a second place, at the World Championships in Halifax, Canada two weeks ago.
