“Top Gun: Maverick” star confirms sequel is on its way
Glen Powell, star of “Top Gun: Maverick,” has confirmed that a sequel to the highly successful 2022 film is in the works, with a filming start date already set.
During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the 35-year-old actor remained largely silent about the third installment of the “Top Gun” series but did mention having a date for the start of filming.
“I mean, I have a date,” Powell revealed to host Josh Horowitz.

When Horowitz pushed for more details about the plot or other aspects of the upcoming film, Powell responded, “Absolutely not,” and suggested they move on to another topic, according to the New York Post.
In January, a report emerged that Paramount Pictures was developing a third “Top Gun” movie with Tom Cruise, though no specifics about the cast or release date were disclosed.
Powell, along with Cruise and Miles Teller, has been asked about the start of production, but details remain scarce.
At the Sundance Film Festival, Powell, known for “Twisters,” mentioned that “some fun stuff” would be announced soon, though it remains confidential. He noted frequent conversations with director Joseph Kosinski, Cruise, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
“There are exciting developments happening,” Powell added. “I don’t know when I’ll be back, but there’s probably a jet waiting for me in the future.”
In March, Bruckheimer told People that they pitched a story to Cruise that he liked, but Cruise’s busy schedule means they’ll have to wait and see.
Bruckheimer, who produced the original 1986 “Top Gun” and its successful 2022 sequel, noted that the latter was both a critical and commercial hit, earning more domestically than any other movie in 2022, as reported by Deadline.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sequel follows Cruise’s character, Pete Mitchell, as a daring test pilot avoiding promotions that would ground him, until he is called back to “Top Gun,” according to IMDb.
The film became one of the highest-grossing films ever, marking Cruise’s first film to achieve such success. The “Jack Reacher” star acknowledged the film’s success and thanked fans on social media for their support.
