Washington Post: Washington has received nearly 500 reports of Israel misusing US weapons
The U.S. government under Joe Biden has received nearly 500 reports claiming that American weapons were used by Israel in attacks that killed Palestinian civilians during the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, according to a report by the Washington Post.
The reports originate from various U.S. government agencies, aid organizations, nonprofits, media reports, and other eyewitnesses, the American newspaper states.
While the State Department directive instructs American officials to complete investigations and propose responses to such claims within two months, no case has progressed that far in the process, according to the report.
Some of the cases may constitute violations of U.S. and international law, sources knowledgeable about the issue told the Post.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken submitted a report to Congress earlier this year, concluding that it is reasonable to assess that American weapons have been used by Israel in ways that do not align with U.S. law. However, Blinken himself stated that Israel’s assurances to the contrary were “credible and plausible” and that the U.S. could not reach definitive conclusions at that time.
