Diplomats monitoring Turkish arrest of Greek woman
The Greek Foreign Ministry is monitoring developments following the arrest, in Turkey, of a Greek woman awaiting trial on suspicion of theft in Istanbul, diplomatic sources have informed.
Greece does not intervene in judicial matters, but ensures the protection of the rights of Greek citizens, the sources noted.
The woman, aged 50, was detained by Turkish police after allegedly stealing a shop owner's phone on November 22 while shopping for headscarves with her 22-year-old daughter and a female friend of theirs.
The three women had gone shopping for headscarves so they could enter Hagia Sophia, the former Orthodox Christian cathedral of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, which was converted from a museum to a mosque in 2020.
