Man jailed over dead baby in Vravrona released after DNA results

A judicial council on Tuesday ordered the release of a 25-year-old Nepalese man who has been in pre-trial detention since May 16 this year for allegedly disposing a dead infant at a landfill in the Attica region of Vravrona.

A forensic examination revealed that the infant was born alive, while the DNA test showed that it was not the 25-year-old's, despite his belief to the contrary.

"The Athens Misdemeanor Court Council ruled that my client should be released without any restrictive measures. His claim of ignorance about the contents of the bag and his real desire to have a child with the accused were found to be true," the25-year-old's lawyer, Dimitris Zorbas, told reporters.

"Now, he will now seek employment and reside permanently in Athens until the date of the trial."
