Ministry of National Defense: Which military camps will close and which units will merge by the end of the year

The Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDS) is immediately implementing Phase A of the relocation and merger plan for military units, as directed by the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias. This is part of the restructuring of the Armed Forces and their New Structure, which involves changes to the formation layout and the closure of Army camps. Phase A will be completed by December 31, 2024.

The objective is to increase staffing rates by eliminating under-staffed units and merging them where necessary, thereby enhancing operational capabilities both at the unit and formation levels, in line with modern operational requirements.

Changes to Be Implemented by December 31, 2024:

  • The “Major Panagiotis Mantouvalos” Camp in Gytheio, Laconia, will be decommissioned. The unit based there will relocate to the “Colonel Konstantinos Davakis” Camp in Xirokambi, Laconia.
  • The “Captain (Ret.) Nikolaos Gerakinis” Camp in Malakasa, Attica, will be decommissioned. The unit based there will relocate to the “Second Lieutenant Dimitrios Panourgias” Camp in Avlaki, Stylida, Fthiotida.
  • The “First Lieutenant Ioannis Kallergis” Camp in Omvriaki, Fthiotida, will be decommissioned. The unit based there will relocate to the “Second Lieutenant Dimitrios Panourgias” Camp in Avlaki, Stylida, Fthiotida.
  • The “Major Ioannis Velissarios” Camp in Ioannina will be decommissioned. The units based there will relocate to the “Brigadier General Charalambos Katsimitros” Camp in Perama, Ioannina, and the “Captain Lorenzo Mavilis” Camp in Kalpaki, Ioannina.
  • The “Papapashalis” Camp in Panorama, Thessaloniki, will be decommissioned. The unit based there will relocate to the “Major (Infantry) Vasileios Papastavrou” Camp in Nea Mesimvria, Thessaloniki.
  • The unit based in the “Major Dimitrios Kallergis” Camp in Antimacheia, Kos, will merge with the unit based in the “General Ioannis Makrygiannis” Camp in Pyli, Kos. The “Major Dimitrios Kallergis” Camp will be decommissioned.

Additional Unit Mergers and Camp Closures:

  • The unit based in the “Captain Evangelos Matsianis” Camp in Lepti, Orestiada, Evros, will merge with the unit based in the “Colonel (Infantry) Ioannis Theodorakis” Camp in Lagos, Evros. The “Captain Evangelos Matsianis” Camp will be decommissioned.
  • The unit based in the “Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Miltiadis Zachos” Camp in Nea Vyssa, Evros, will merge with the unit based in the “Lieutenant (Engineer) Ioannis Goumenakis” Camp in Rizia, Evros. The “Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Miltiadis Zachos” Camp will be decommissioned.
  • The unit based in the “Second Lieutenant (Artillery) Dimitrios Anagnostou” Camp in Peplos, Evros, will merge with the unit based in the “Commander Chrysomallidis” Camp in Doriskos, Evros. The “Second Lieutenant (Artillery) Dimitrios Anagnostou” Camp will be decommissioned.
  • The National Guard Battalion based in the “Commander Theodoros Ampatzopoulos” Camp in Metaxades, Evros, will merge with the National Guard Battalion based in the “Saint Fotini” Camp in Didymoteicho, Evros. The “Commander Theodoros Ampatzopoulos” Camp will be decommissioned.

Second Phase by March 31, 2025
Phase B of the decommissioning of camps and the relocation/merger of units will be completed by March 31, 2025.

For the camps mentioned above, once the relocations and mergers are completed, the National Defense Fund (NDF) will immediately begin actions to optimize their utilization.
