Wikipedia takes Erdogan to High Court in Turkey over freedom of speech

Online encyclopedia Wikipedia has made an official appeal to the Turkish Constitutional Court, after a local court in Turkey rejected its initial appeal against the blocking of its content by the Turkish government. The Turkish Information and Communications authorities decided to block access to the site in Turkey based on a law against obscene content threat to national security.

An Ankara court on May 5 rejected an appeal by Wikipedia against a previous ruling to block access to the website in Turkey, saying freedom of expression can be "restricted in some cases" and citing the country's ongoing state of emergency.

An Ankara court on May 5 rejected an appeal by Wikipedia against a previous ruling to block access to the website in Turkey following an administrative measure.

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) stated on April 29 that it had blocked access to Wikipedia, citing a law allowing it to ban access to websites deemed obscene or a threat to national security.

IMC TV satellite broadcast blacked out

The satellite broadcast of IMC TV was blacked out on Feb. 24, following a public prosecutor's demand that its frequency be cut for "making terror organization propaganda."   

"There has been an interruption in the satellite broadcast of IMC TV. The reason has not been clarified yet," the small leftist station said in a tweet.

Turkey's fresh ban pushes social media giants to remove content

Turkish authorities have blocked access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube over their initial refusal to remove photos of a prosecutor who was taken hostage by militants in Istanbul. After hours, the ban on Facebook and Twitter has been been lifted as both websites complied with the court ruling.
