US-backed Syrian fighters seize parts of IS 'capital' Raqqa
A U.S.-backed Syrian opposition force said on June 11 that it had captured a northwestern neighborhood of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) self-declared capital of Raqqa, making it the second district to fall into their hands in as many days after the group launched a wide offensive to gain control of the extremists' de facto capital.
Syria state TV says plane crashed, pilot rescued
Syrian state TV said Sept. 21 that a military warplane had crashed and the pilot was rescued after carrying out a combat mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) northwest of the capital, Damascus.

Syrian journalist attacked by ISIL in Turkey dies
A Syrian journalist who was shot in the Turkish city of Gaziantep in an attack claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has died from his wounds.
Mohammed Zahir al-Sherqat died on the afternoon of April 12 in a hospital in Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, according to his friend Barry Abdulattif, a Syrian activist.
