On Wednesday Zekovic filed charges against Pozdnyakov after he posted on the Telegram group that Zekovic "will pay for his lies".

Vujicic cautioned however that the process requires a stable government, which politically-turbulent Montenegro does not have at the moment.

After being established to replace the old, discredited secret police, the new National Security Agency, ANB, is facing its first major public test over its staff vetting process.

Montenegro's leaders are to meet yet again next week to try to resolve the crisis in the country following the failure of a no-confidence vote in the government in January.

The crisis, Montenegro's worst since it gained independence in 2006, revolves around opposition claims that the government has no legitimacy to organize general elections planned this year.

The Montenegrin government has proposed emergency amendments to the law governing the National Security Agency, ANB, to establish a security system to meet NATO standards and improve the way in which the country treats classified information.
