Germany's Merkel urges talks to resolve air base row with Turkey

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged talks to resolve ongoing disputes with Turkey on German lawmakers' visits to troops stationed in Turkey as part of NATO missions.

In an interview with public television ARD on July 16, Merkel said current disputes between Berlin and Ankara should be resolved through bilateral talks and talks among the allies at NATO.

German Deputy Foreign Minister: Le Pen got too many votes

Michael Roth, Germany’s deputy foreign minister, says the result was marred by right wing candidate Marine Le Pen getting 11 million votes.
Roth, whose portfolio includes Franco-German relations, told public broadcaster ARD on Monday that “it mustn’t become normal that right-wing extremists and populists achieve such strong results.”

Merkel says eurozone must remain one bloc

The eurozone must remain as one bloc, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, urging members of the single currency bloc to deliver on their common commitments.

"For me it is not a matter of two speeds within the eurozone," Merkel said. "The eurozone must remain together. And what we agreed on should be delivered together by all the euro member states."

Assad vows to 'do our part' so Syria ceasefire holds

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad pledged March 1 to do his part to ensure that a fragile ceasefire holds and offered "full amnesty" to rebels who hand in their weapons.

"We will do our part so that the whole thing works," he told German public broadcaster ARD in an interview, referring to a three-day-old truce drawn up by Russia and the United States.

Merkel says 'no plan B' for migration deal with Turkey

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Feb. 28 said there was no 'Plan B' for the European Union deal reached with Turkey for reducing the flow of migrants, defending her open-door policy for migrants and  rejecting any limit on the number of refugees allowed into her country despite divisions within her government.
