Israel has informed the U.S. that it plans to conduct a limited-scale ground operation in Lebanon that could begin imminently, an American official told the Washington Post.

The planned operation will be smaller in scale compared to Israel’s last war against Hezbollah in 2006, the official emphasized.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have initiated small-scale operations in southern Lebanon, including incursions into tunnels used by Hezbollah, in preparation for a possible ground invasion, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which cites anonymous sources.

Palestinian group Hamas said its leader in Lebanon was killed Monday in a strike on the country's south, as official media reported a strike on a Palestinian refugee camp.

"Fatah Sharif Abu al-Amine, the leader of Hamas... in Lebanon and member of the movement's leadership abroad" was killed in an air strike on his "home in the Al-Bass camp in south Lebanon", a Hamas statement said.

Rescue teams working in the devastated neighborhood of Beirut, where Hezbollah’s headquarters were located, recovered the body of the organization’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, on Sunday, according to a medical source and a security source who spoke to Reuters.
