City of Athens struggling to keep up with public works tearing up capital’s streets, sidewalks

The Athens Municipal Authority does not have the resources to keep up with more than 1,700 upgrades and repairs being carried out across its jurisdiction by public and private utility companies, which often leave a mess of broken streets and pavements behind, adding to residents' frustration with the noise, dust and lack of sidewalks and parking, according to a city official. 

City of Athens to host Christmas lunch for 1,200 people

The Athens municipal authority will be hosting a Christmas luncheon for some 1,200 of the Greek capital's homeless and poor on Wednesday.

The lunch, which will be held at the Rouf indoor municipal sports arena, will be opened at 1 p.m. by Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, while there will also be music and gifts. 

First quake-damaged Athens building to be torn down

The Athens municipal authority will be demolishing the first of several crumbling buildings that were condemned in the wake of last month's 5.1-Richter earthquake.

The building in question is an abandoned residence on the corner of Mylopotamou and Stratigou Davaki streets in the neighborhood of Ambelokipi and its demolition is slated to start 7.30 a.m. on Monday.

Carnival fever is in the air

A cultural association from Skyros showcases carnival customs of the central Aegean island in an event at central Syntagma Square in Athens on Saturday. With carnival season officially under way, the Athens municipal authority, among others, has organized free events drawing on Greece's diverse local traditions.
