Citizens' Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis have signed a four-year cooperation agreement aimed at improving day-to-day life in the Greek capital.

The document signed on Monday foresees the creation of a Center for Managing Daily Life, which will be operated jointly by the Hellenic Police (ELAS) and the Athens Municipal Police.

The number of inspections carried out by the Athens municipal police on establishments to determine whether they are enforcing a ban on smoking in public places tripled in the first half of this year compared to last year, figures showed on Tuesday. 

Motorists who have had their license plates confiscated by the Athens Municipal Police for minor infringements will be able to retrieve them ahead of the Easter break, a measure aimed at facilitating holidaymakers over the long weekend.
