African Union 'strongly condemns' DRCongo coup bid

The head of the African Union Commission said he was following events in the Democratic Republic of Congo with "great concern" and "strongly condemns" an attempted coup there.

The DR Congo military said on Sunday it had foiled a coup bid near the offices of President Felix Tshisekedi in the capital Kinshasa involving "foreigners and Congolese".

Beyonce Knowles and Lady Gaga are among 36 prominent women who have signed a petition calling March 8 on the G7 and the African Union to tackle female poverty.
      
The US singers were joined by actresses Meryl Streep, Charlize Theron, Rosamund Pike and Rita Wilson in signing the letter, issued on International Women's Day.
      

African Union calls for 7,500-strong force to fight Boko Haram

The African Union called Jan. 30 for a regional five-nation force of 7,500 troops to defeat the "horrendous" rise of Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist militants.
 
The call for collective action came as leaders of the 54-member bloc opened their two-day annual summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, where they were addressing a string of crises across the continent.
 

Dacic: Aim to revive good relations with AU countries

BELGRADE/ADDIS ABABA - Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic stated on Tuesday that during the second day of the session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, he had several bilateral meetings with a view to reviving good relations with African countries and obtaining a confirmation of the stand on the non-recognition of Kosovo-Metohija independence.
