Turkish police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse women protesters who marched on Thursday night to mark International Day for the Elimination Violence Against Women.

"We are not silenced, we do not fear and we do not obey," the women chanted together in the streets of Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Mersin and other cities and towns.

Turkey’s main opposition will discuss ways to end over a decade of conservative rule in the country at an extraordinary congress to be held today and tomorrow, while also proposing the adoption of European norms of self-government in an effort to solve the Kurdish issue.

Turkey has accelerated the ratification procedure for a key international treaty which has been on the shelf since it was signed more than three decades ago.

As of March 2014, the total number of children in prison and detention centers throughout Turkey stands at 1,686, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ has said.

Bozdağ’s statement came in response to a motion filed by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Ankara deputy Özcan Yeniçeri, Anadolu Agency reported on July 2.

The Board of Management of the Council of Europe’s Eurimages, European Cinema Support Fund, has agreed to support 20 film projects of feature films and two animated films for a total amount 8.3 million euros.

Joan Miro’s bronze sculpture “Femme aux beaux seins” (The Woman with Beautiful Breasts), is on display at the Baksı Museum, which won the Council of Europe Museum Prize for 2014

The museum was established in 2010 in the village of Baksı by Professor Hüsamettin Koçan and is located 45 kilometers away from the eastern Black Sea city of Bayburt.
