Counterterrorism police were on alert on Thursday after former prime minister Lucas Papademos was injured, along with two other people, when a parcel bomb exploded in his car in central Athens.

The explosion occurred at around 6.30 p.m. when Papademos opened an envelope in his car, police said.

An Islamic State Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspect detained in the Central Anatolian province of Konya raised eyebrows with his interesting question to reporters en route to police headquarters on Dec. 16, asking: "Am I handsome?" 

Counterterrorism police in Konya had raided 43 different addresses and detained 33 suspects over alleged links to ISIL, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Turkey has ramped up its domestic security efforts against suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants with detentions and deportations at the country's largest airport, after recent deadly suicide bombings and uncovered planned attacks.

Turkish police detained 15 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in simultaneous raids in Istanbul on Oct. 29, in an escalation of anti-terror operations against ISIL following the twin suicide bomb blasts in Ankara earlier this month. 

Counterterrorism police officers raided an apartment in the Athens neighborhood of Neos Cosmos that is believed to have been rented by Grigoris Tsironis, one of the suspects linked to an armed bank robbery last August in Distomo, central Greece, but a search yielded no weapons.

Counterterrorism police officers continued an investigation over the weekend into the connections of 31-year-old Antonis Stambopoulos, who has been linked to jailed Revolutionary Struggle leader Nikos Maziotis.
