Bosnia and Herzegovina held its ninth general elections on 2 October 2022.

But the day-to-day headlines obscure a bigger, simpler truth.

Dodik remains a threat to the central feature of the Dayton Peace Accords - peace in Bosnia, and thus the whole of the Western Balkans - because for a decade and a half he has faced virtually no meaningful consequence for his increasingly extremist positions.

They warn that years of political divisions, zero-sum games, distrust and poor communication between local leaders, as well as growing tensions among key regional and global actors, have left Bosnia a ticking time-bomb that could go off at any moment, leading to the collapse of the remaining joint institutions or even the breakup of the country.

MPs in the entity parliament in Bosnia's Bosniak- and Croat-dominated Federation could vote in the coming weeks on a new draft electoral law put forward by five political parties - aimed at averting the possibility of general elections going ahead in October without a legal mechanism to elect the Federation parliament's upper chamber.
